PETALING JAYA - The number of foreign women arrested for prostitution nationwide rose by 38 per cent between January and April, compared to the same period last year.
Federal Secret Societies, Gambling and Vice Division (D7) principal assistant director Senior Asst Comm Roslee Chik said police rounded up 6,275 women compared to 3,862 last year.
"Women from Vietnam topped the list with 2,133 arrested followed by 1,369 from Thailand and 1,661 Chinese nationals," he said yesterday.
"Other foreign women involved in the sex ring came from Indonesia, the Philippines, India, Cambodia, Laos and Uganda."
SAC Roslee said the women were arrested for prostitution in massage parlours, besides working as guest relations officers in entertainment outlets.
"We went all out between January and April this year to round them up," he said.
SAC Roslee explained that the high demand by operators of entertainment outlets and massage parlours had led to an influx of foreign sex workers in the country.
He said Bukit Aman also arrested 621 Malaysian women in the first four months of the year.
"It is a slight drop compared to 934 arrested during the same period last year," he said, adding that they aim to clamp down hard on prostitution rings.
