Motor claims surge with rise in cyclist numbers

SINGAPORE - Motor-accident claims which involved cyclists doubled from 2010 to last year, according to one general-insurance provider.

AIG Asia Pacific Insurance said yesterday that a rise in the number of cyclists appears to coincide with the increase in accidents. In the first half of this year, the number of cyclist-related motor accidents exceeded the total for last year by 30 per cent.

AIG provides insurance for vehicles through a network of vehicle dealerships and insurance agents.

According to AIG, the number of bodily-injury claims made by cyclists doubled between 2010 and last year.

AIG Singapore vice-president Wong Siew Lee said the company has seen an average annual increase of 11 per cent in bodily-injury claims overall over the past five years.
