MP Pritam Singh named Workers' Party's assistant secretary-general

SINGAPORE - Member of Parliament (MP) for Aljunied GRC, Pritam Singh has been named as the Workers' Party's (WP) assistant secretary-general, which has increased the possibility of his taking over the party leadership.

According to The Straits Times, the leadership positions were determined on Tuesday (June 7) night following the recent internal election of the WP's central executive council.

MP for Aljunied GRC Chen Show Mao who lost to secretary-general Low Thia Kiang for party leadership by 16 votes, still remained as the party's treasurer. Meanwhile former council members, L. Somasundaram and John Yam who had nominated Mr Chen, failed to get re-elected to the council.

A MyPaper report stated that Mr Chen's contest against Mr Low marked the first time the latter had a challenger to his position since he assumed it in 2001.

MP for Aljunied GRC Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap was also named vice-chairman of WP on Tuesday.
