More than 1,000 residents of all ethnicities came together to celebrate Deepavali at Ci Yuan Green Park on Oct 26 for the Ang Mo Kio-Hougang Deepa Oli Carnival.

Organised by the Ci Yuan Community Centre Indian Activity Executive Committee and Ang Mo Kio-Hougang Grassroots Organisations, the event was graced by grassroots advisers to Ang Mo Kio Grassroots Organisations Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Mr Yeo Guat Kwang.

The celebration was held to promote neighbourliness and inter-ethnic understanding. Residents were treated to a mini bazaar, a variety of local Indian cuisine like roti prata and thosai, performances that highlighted classical Indian dances as well as singing, traditional games by the Indian Heritage Board, and an 11.5m-wide rangoli display in honour of SG50.

The event was also aimed at raising the appreciation of Singapore's unique cultural identity, especially in the younger generation and in new citizens.
