GEORGE TOWN- Four Indonesians trying to smuggle more than 16.8kg of syabu worth RM3.4mil (S$1.5 mil) out of Penang were arrested by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency. The foreigners were hiding the sacks among sacks of onions in a barter boat.
State MMEA enforcement chief Kapt Kamaruszaman Abu Hassan said patrol officers stopped the boat four nautical miles off the Tanjong Tokong coast do conduct checks at about 11.45am on Friday.
"My officers found a blue plastic bag with 18 packs of multi-coloured crystals powder beneath a hidden compartment," he said. "The packs were covered by 300 sacks of onion," he added.
"The skipper and three crewmen, aged between 32 and 52, were arrested," Kapt Kamaruszaman said.
"We believe that the boat was heading to Aceh in Indonesia at that time," he told reporters yesterday.
Kapt Kamaruszaman said the case would be investigated as drug trafficking under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952.
