New one-stop centre for low wage workers

SINGAPORE - If you earn an average gross monthly income of $1,900 or less and need guidance on work-related issues, this new centre is for you.

The Labour Movement's first U Care Centre here, located in Jurong, was officially launched yesterday by Mr Zainal Sapari, director of NTUC's Unit for Contract and Casual Workers. It offers low-wage Singapore citizens and permanent residents advice on issues such as employment rights and fair contract terms.

The centre was set up following a series of focus-group discussions with various groups - including workers, grassroots and union leaders - in August. Several issues were raised then, such as a lack of targeted assistance for low-wage workers and uncertainty among these workers as to who they could approach to seek help on workplace issues.

A toll-free hotline, 1800-255-2828, has also been set up for the same purpose.
