NTU club undergoing upgrading works

Upgrading and renovation works to the Nanyang Technological University Alumni Club (NTUAC) building at one-north in Buona Vista have begun.

The facilities, including its level 1 and level 2 carparks, have been closed since Dec 1.

When completed by the end of next year, the upgraded clubhouse will have all its facilities located on the third and fourth levels of the nine-storey building, with a brand new street-level entrance and facade.

The restaurant and bar, karaoke and jackpot rooms on level eight will move down to the third level where the club's gymnasium and swimming pool, and fun pools for children, are.

The function hall and meeting and reading rooms from the other levels will be moved down too.

Club president Tan Teck Beng recently told some 100 members, who had attended three dialogues, that having all club facilities located on levels three and four will provide better connectivity and ease of movement.

"No club facilities will be taken away, but enhanced, after the upgrading," he added.

Members have given their feedback on the improvements and some even suggested that the club's name be changed because the current one, with NTUAC as its acronym, sounds more like a trade union's name than a graduate club's.

Mr Tan promised to take all feedback and suggestions to the Nanyang Technological University, which owns the building and clubhouse.

The university's chief housing and auxiliary services officer, Mr Jimmy Lee, said: "The improvement works will include technology-enhanced rooms that can be used for training and meetings, better wellness and recreation facilities, and a new gym extension."

He added that new escalators and staircases will also be installed to improve access from the ground floor to the third floor, which is the main reception of the building.

He declined to disclose the cost, but The Straits Times understands that the renovations are part of the upgrading of the entire nine-storey building at one-north, estimated to cost at least $20 million.

Founded in 1986, the club moved from its Bukit Timah bungalow clubhouse, and town clubhouse in River Valley Road, to one-north in Buona Vista in 2006.

All 2,000 club members have been informed that they can use the facilities of Club Insignia at Oasis, Science Park 1, and those of National University of Singapore Society's three clubhouses at Kent Ridge, Suntec City and Bukit Timah during the period of the renovation.
