NTUC appoints Chan Chun Sing as Deputy Secretary-General

SINGAPORE - The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) has announced that Minister for Social and Family Development and Second Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing will take on the role of Deputy Secretary-General.

In a statement to the press, NTUC said it had sent in a request to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Jan 23 for Mr Chan to join NTUC. The Central Committee wanted Mr Chan to help strengthen its labour leadership and be the link between the Government and the Labour Movement.

PM Lee supported NTUC's choice and agreed for Mr Chan to serve NTUC immediately on a part-time basis.

As of April 1, Mr Chan will take on his new role full-time.

NTUC's Central Committee, comprising President Diana Chia and Secretary-General Lim Swee Say, passed a resolution to co-opt Mr Chan into the committee and appointed him as Deputy Secretary-General under the NTUC Constitution effective today onwards.
