KOTA KINABALU - A 20-year-old father was jailed a month after he admitted to assaulting his teenage wife.
Berhamin Sakib, who was not represented, pleaded guilty to committing the offence at about 9am on July 15, before magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie at the magistrate's court in Kota Kinabalu yesterday.
The unemployed man's act of slapping and pushing his wife to the ground when she confronted him with a knife was videotaped and went viral.
Berhamin was charged with voluntarily hurting his 16-year-old wife, Nurbainah Bading at about 9am on July 15.
The couple were arguing over money to buy diapers for their 10-month-old baby at their rented shophouse in Sinsuran here.
Berhamin was arrested at about 8pm the same day after the victim made a police report.
In his mitigation, Berhamin pleaded for a lenient sentence claiming that he had to look after his siblings.
The court heard that Berhamin had slapped and pushed his wife to the ground after seeing her carrying a knife when confronting him about their marriage and his refusal to give her money to buy diapers for their infant son.
