SINGAPORE - Some parents are unhappy when informed that they were not invited to Tao Nan School's Primary Six graduation ceremony Thursday morning unless their child was a prize winner.
According to a report on Shin Min Daily, the parents received a letter notification dated Nov 3 informing them of the ceremony's details. The letter also said only parents or guardians of students who have won awards would be invited to attend the event.
It explained that this was due to space constraints on the school grounds.
A parent who declined to be named said that this arrangement is not ideal as it would arouse misunderstanding.
"What kind of message are we trying to send to our kids? Does this mean that only students who won prizes are allowed to celebrate?" asked the parent.
"Students who studied hard but didn't win any awards - are they not worthy too? We should help every child celebrate because they have finished six years of studies", he added.
The parent understands that there is space constraints but said the school could have come up with other arrangements. For example, the school could let those parents who responded first to the invite have priority to attend the ceremony.
Another parent expressed a different point of view.
Madam Chen Guoping said she didn't mind the school only invited parents whose children won prizes.
She said that since the ceremony is for the students, it would be better if the parents are not there, so the kids can feel more comfortable and have more fun.
Madam Chen also said that other than space constraints, the school also has to arrange for parking and seating which can take time to plan.
Her son graduated from Rosyth School last year. She said parents were invited to the students' graduation ceremony as the school had planned performances for them.
According to the Chinese daily, students at Tao Nan were given a CD containing photos of the graduation ceremony so they could share with their family after.
A student told the paper that his father specially took leave to come for the ceremony, but found out later that he could not attend as he had not win any prizes.
He said his father felt disappointed but understood that there's space limitations.
