Party for Singapore

Party for Singapore

If jostling with the downtown crowds over National Day weekend seems too much to bear, gather friends and family members for a theme party.

Mr Alphy Amir, owner of events planner, who has been planning private and corporate parties for the past 15 years, says: "Since we can't all be at the parade, most of us watch the celebrations on our TVs. Why not bring the parade into your living room?"

Mr Amir, 40, recommends hosts encourage their guests to wear red and white clothes and paint their faces, much like they would if they were at the parade downtown.

The parade is to a National Day party what a cake is to a birthday party, and watching the parade together should be the focus of the bash, he says.

"The parade is where you see people from all backgrounds coming together, how you feel the camaraderie, which is what National Day is all about," he adds.

For decor ideas, fill your home with Singapore flags and other red and white items, including bunting, tablecloth, plastic cutlery, and red and white flowers. These can be purchased at Spotlight (Level 5, Plaza Singapura, 68 Orchard Road).

Other Singapore-themed trinkets, such as Merlion statues, "Singapore is a Fine City" T-shirts and magnets can be found for a few dollars in Chinatown or at Mustafa Centre.

Hosts can also provide their guests with goodie bags filled with items such as whistles, little Singapore flags and red and white candies.

Life!Weekend presents other party ideas to get you into a festive mood.
