Patient at Tan Tock Seng Hospital dies after falling from 9th storey

SINGAPORE - A Filipino patient at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) died after falling from the ninth storey of the building.

Chinese daily Lianhe Wanbao reported that the man, who is in his 40s, broke a glass panel on the ninth floor and fell, landing near a taxi stand at the foot of the building.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics at 10am yesterday.

A TTSH spokesman told The Straits Times that the patient had broken the glass at a fire escape stairwell in the general inpatient ward.

He added: "The broken window has since been boarded up and police investigations are ongoing.

"Our staff have also checked on the other patients in the ward to ensure they are well. We will continue to monitor them closely."

Lianhe Wanbao reported that a wide area at the foot of the hospital was littered with shattered glass where the man fell. The glass pieces even landed on cars parked as far as 15m away from the body.

A witness told the paper that he heard a loud bang and was shocked to see a man "fall from the sky" a second or two later.

The patient landed near a taxi stand where there were some passengers waiting in line.

TTSH spokesman said no one else was hurt. The hospital declined to give more details.
