Paving the way for students to go overseas
Mr Philip Kuah, 54, and his wife, Wendy. Mr Kuah is the founder and managing director of Hui & Kuah Pte. Ltd, an educational consultancy and agency that helps to arrange for admissions and accomodation details for students who want to study overseas.

She was so impressed that she made sure her son would also use their services about 30 years later when he was applying for his tertiary studies in Australia.

When secondary school teacher Sunu Sivadasan, 54, and her younger sister wanted to go to the US to pursue their degree courses about 30 years ago, they approached education consultancy Hui & Kuah for help.

Madam Sunu said: "We located them through the Yellow Pages and decided to give them a try, as there weren't many education consultancies in Singapore then."

She wanted to study biology in the US and her younger sister wanted to study English and English Literature there. Madam Sunu said: "We wanted to experience an overseas education. I had been teaching for two years before I decided to pursue my degree, and my dad sponsored both our studies."

Hui & Kuah was founded in 1981 and has since established itself as a reliable and stable source of information to those interested in studying overseas.

It is one of the oldest educational consultancies in Singapore for overseas education, and represents more than 80 institutions worldwide that offer vocational and academic programmes ranging from Certificates and Diplomas to Bachelor's, Master's and PhD degrees.

As an officially accredited agency of these institutions, Hui & Kuah, which is now located at Riverside Piazza, within 5 minutes walking distance from Clarke Quay MRT Station, offers comprehensive free services providing information about the institutions, facilitating, arranging suitable admission tests, acceptance and payment to the university; as well as providing assistance in obtaining visas, travel arrangements, accommodation and airport reception.

When Madam Sunu and her younger sister went to Hui & Kuah, which was then located at Orchard Towers in Orchard Road, they were advised to enrol at the University of Oregon, US.

She said: "Mrs Wendy Kuah of Hui & Kuah recommended the University of Oregon as many Singaporeans had gone there to study, and the weather in Oregon was more tolerable for Singaporeans too. It was also one of the universities accepted by the Ministry of Education for teachers to pursue their degree courses."

Madam Sunu pursued her Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in biology, from 1985-1988.

"Hui & Kuah was very helpful and clear in their instructions. They handled all the necessary applications and made all the work seem so easy.

"They also knew what tests and/or information was necessary for us to qualify for the courses we wanted to study," Madam Sunu said.

More than two decades after Madam Sunu engaged Hui & Kuah's services, her son is now doing the same. She said: "I am sure they will give the same excellent service to him as they did for me and my sister more than 20 years ago."
