PM Lee congratulates German Chancellor Merkel on her election victory

SINGAPORE - Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has written to congratulate Dr Angela Merkel, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, for her victory in the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union in the German Federal Elections held on Sep 22.

The following is the written message from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong:

Your Excellency,

Congratulations on the excellent results of the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union in the 2013 federal elections. Your victory reflects the German people's support for your party's programmes, and confidence in your personal leadership and vision for Germany.

Germany and Singapore enjoy excellent relations, underpinned by wide-ranging co-operation and close people-to-people links. Your visit to Singapore in 2011, and President Dr Tony Tan's visit to Germany in 2012, have strengthened our ties and catalysed our bilateral cooperation. I have greatly appreciated exchanging views with you when we have attended conferences together, for example at the recent G20 meeting in St Petersburg. I look forward to working with the new Federal Government to take our bilateral relationship forward.

I wish you good health and success, and hope to see you again soon.

Yours sincerely

LEE HSIEN LOONG

Her Excellency Dr Angela Merkel

Federal Chancellor

Federal Republic of Germany
