Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu

PRIME Minister Lee Hsien Loong has congratulated Turkish leader Ahmet Davutoglu on his appointment as the country's new premier.

In his letter to Mr Davutoglu yesterday, Mr Lee expressed confidence that Turkey will continue to grow and prosper under Mr Davutoglu's leadership, and said there was great potential for collaboration between Singapore and Turkey in diverse areas.

"As hubs in our respective regions, Singapore and Turkey are natural partners," Mr Lee wrote. "I look forward to growing our ties and taking our relations forward for the mutual benefit of our two peoples. "I wish you every success in your new appointment and hope to meet you again soon," he said.

Mr Davutoglu took over the mantle of prime minister from Mr Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was sworn in as the country's first directly elected president on Thursday.
