PM Lee sends condolence messages to Philippines and Laos

SINGAPORE - Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has written letters to President of the Republic of the Philippines Benigno S. Aquino and Prime Minister of Lao People’s Democratic Republic Thongsing Thammavong to convey his condolences on recent events in their countries.

Mr Lee wrote a message to the Philippines in the wake of the earthquake in the Visayas Region, Philippines, on October 15.

He said in his letter to President Aquino:

"On behalf of the Government and people of Singapore, I extend our deepest condolences to you and the people of the Philippines on the tragic loss of lives and destruction caused by the recent earthquake in Visayas.

"Natural disasters such as these remind us of our common humanity. I am confident that, under your leadership, your people will overcome this tragedy with fortitude and rebuild the affected areas.

"Our thoughts are with you and your people during this difficult time".

In a separate message to Laos, he expressed his condolences following the crash of Lao Airlines flight QV301 on October 16.

In his letter to Prime Minister Thongsing, PM Lee said:

"I was deeply saddened to learn of the Lao Airlines crash near Pakse airport on 16 October 2013.

" On behalf of the Government and people of Singapore, I offer my condolences to you, the families of the victims and the people of Lao PDR on this tragedy. Our thoughts are with you and your people during this time of sorrow".
