PM Lee thanks MPs for celebrating LKY's birthday

SINGAPORE - Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in a Facebook post on Monday night that he and his family were deeply touched by the birthday greetings for his father Lee Kuan Yew.

"We deeply appreciated the gesture by MPs to mark his 90th birthday in Parliament this afternoon," PM Lee wrote.

"Thank you all for your kind words and good-wishes!"

Leader of the House Ng Eng Hen gave a stirring speech to mark Mr Lee's 90th birthday at the close of parliamentary proceedings, which was followed by MPs rising to give Mr Lee a standing ovation.

The former prime minister made a "special effort" to be in the House and it was against his doctor's advice, Dr Ng added.

In the Members' Room after the sitting, PAP, opposition and Nominated MPs sang Happy Birthday to founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew in English, Mandarin and Malay.
