Police arrest suspected lift molester in two hours

SINGAPORE - Police have arrested a 27-year-old man believed to be involved in a case of Outraging of Modesty.

On Mar 2 at about 12.20am, a 19-year-old woman informed the police that she had been molested by an unidentified man in a lift at Yishun Street 72.

According to a statement released by the Singapore Police Force, officers from the Yishun South Neighbourhood Police Centre of Ang Mo Kio Police Division arrested the suspect at Yishun Avenue 4 at about 1.50am on the same day.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect might have followed the victim after alighting from a bus they were on.

The suspect will be charged in court on Mar 3. If convicted, he may be jailed up to 10 years and will also be liable to caning.

The police would like to advise the public to adopt the following crime prevention measures:

1. Be aware and alert of your surroundings. If you see any suspicious character, or if you suspect that you are being followed, remain calm and proceed to a crowded area or call the police for assistance.

2. Do not enter the lift with a stranger.

3. If you are molested, immediately shout for help. Take note of the description of the culprit, the direction and mode of escape taken by the culprit. Call '999' as soon as it is safe to do so.
