Police receive reports of handbag-slitting thefts during Christmas Eve

The police have received 9 reports of handbag-slitting thefts along Orchard Road on Christmas Eve.

The thieves struck between 7pm on Dec 24, and 2.30am on Dec 25, when their victims were walking in crowded areas.

The culprits were believed to have used a sharp object to slit open the bags and remove valuables, which included wallets and mobile phones.

A Facebook post on Monday by the police advised people to be vigilant especially in crowded places during the festive period.

They cautioned people to be wary of suspicious persons or people following them; not be distracted by strangers creating a commotion or accidentally bumping/spilling something onto you; keep a close watch on your belongings at all times and do not leave them unattended; clutch their bags in front of them and ensure that it is fastened or zipped at all times; and avoid carrying excessive cash, valuables or jewellery.
