Women, together with new citizens and permanent residents (PR) in their 30s, may soon have a role to play in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said on Tuesday.
Dr Ng said the committee to strengthen National service is looking to provide volunteers with meaningful military opportunities not limited to administration.
but the committee has yet to work out the specifics - the training required, what roles can be assigned and how much time would be asked of the volunteers, he said.
The committee, chaired by Dr Ng, is also looking at ways to improve the administrative efficiency of the SAF and engage employers better.
This comes after their visit to Finland and Switzerland, which have conscripted armies, last month.
Dr Ng said the committee, which was convened earlier this year, was halfway through its task, following focus group discussions, townhall meetings and a survey of 1,251 Singaporeans.
The next phase will see the committee coming up with specific recommendations for the SAF.
