President Tony Tan conferred Honorary Membership by Singapore Medical Association

SINGAPORE – President Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam has been conferred Honorary Membership by the Singapore Medical Association (SMA) at its 56th anniversary dinner on Saturday night.

The SMA Honorary Membership is the highest honour that SMA can confer on those who are distinguished in public life or who have rendered meritorious service to the medical profession or to the Association.

In its citation, SMA said that Dr Tony Tan had championed the development of higher education in Singapore, including medical education for over 20 years.

"Under Dr Tan’s leadership, our universities became more globalised, but at the same time they were also made more accessible to Singaporeans regardless of their family or financial background," the citation says.

"Dr Tan’s passion for medical education was evident in his engagement with various healthcare institutions for the advancement of the medical education and research arenas in Singapore," the SMA said.

SMA also said in its citation that Dr Tony Tan had great foresight, and played a major role in the development of Singapore as a Biomedical Hub and a centre of excellence in Medical Education and Research.
