President Tony Tan Keng Yam hosts tea for volunteers at Istana

SINGAPORE - President Tony Tan Keng Yam and Mrs Mary Tan hosted an appreciation tea for about 60 volunteers at the Istana today.

These volunteers come from various sectors such as the social services, arts and heritage, sports, culture and environment.

The event was held in conjunction with International Volunteer Day, which fell on Dec 5. The National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre and the International Volunteer Day Executive Committee chaired by the YMCA Singapore also helped organise today's event.

President Tony Tan thanked the volunteers in attendance for their efforts in contributing their time, talents and professional skill-sets as well as creating a positive impact on the lives of those they have helped. He launched the President's Challenge Volunteer Drive in 2012 to promote volunteerism.

President Tan said: "I hope to see more Singaporeans contributing to the community though volunteering and help build a more caring and resilient Singapore."
