A 80-year-old man's body was discovered near a road and his 66-year-old wife was found dead in a car near the scene, the Chiayi police said yesterday, adding that as two notes were discovered in the car, the police suspect the couple committed suicide.
According to the notes left in the car, the husband had been taking care of his sick wife for years, police said, adding that the husband also got sick recently.
That could be the reason why the couple decided to committed suicide, authorities said.
Given that there was a scar on the wife's neck, police suspect that the 80-year-old man strangled his wife to death and then hanged himself in the vicinity of the car.
The police said that the old couple went to a park in Dapu Township in Chiayi County on Sunday night and that the man asked a young man surnamed Kuan to help carry his wife to the car.
Police said the 16-year-old Kuan claimed that after he saw the news yesterday morning, he suspected that the couple found was the same that asked for his help on Monday. He reported the incident to police in an attempt to assist their investigation.
After questioning, the police confirmed that the couple found dead was the same couple Kuan met in the park.
Kuan claimed that the old man gave him NT$3,000 (S$124) as a reward for carrying his wife to the car, but Kuan declined. He said he did not think anything unusual was going on Sunday night because he saw the woman coughing and she was also still breathing, police said.
The final report will be released after the investigation is concluded by prosecutors and forensic experts, the police said.
