PS, thanks for the memories

PS, thanks for the memories

It was where love blossomed for Yong-Lee Chooi Ling, who spent most of her weekends at Plaza Singapura (PS) in the late 1980s.

Her then boyfriend, who is now her husband, lived in Jurong and she in Ang Mo Kio, so they would take the train from Ang Mo Kio to the mall, where they ate, window shopped or just enjoyed each other's company.

"And it was not only where we courted, but also where we went as a married couple and where we took our children," recounted the 52-year-old university hall executive officer.

Even though PS is now very different from its early days, it still holds a special place in Mrs Yong-Lee's memories - memories which she has chosen to share through the PS photography contest.

She was one of five winners who received $500 worth of CapitaVouchers, along with $500 worth of gift vouchers from Howards Storage World. Another 20 participants walked away with consolation prizes.

The contest, which invited shoppers to submit photos taken at the mall between 1974 and 1997, was held in conjunction with PS' 40th anniversary.

Another winner of the contest was Suzy Sabtu, 51, who worked as a sales representative at the OG, and later, John Little outlets located at PS in the 1980s.

Madam Suzy lived in Bishan back then and would take the bus to work each morning.

For her, PS holds the only memories she has left of her colleagues, whom she lost contact with after she left her job.

Now a grandmother and caring full-time for her two-week old granddaughter, Madam Suzy hardly has time to visit the refurbished mall.

But she said she has made plans with her daughter to spend an entire day there, shopping and trying out the new restaurants.

"Then I can also look around for clothes and toys for my granddaughter," she said.
