Quarrel could have led to killing at wake

BUTTERWORTH - A quarrel could have been the reason why a lone gunman opened fire at several people attending a wake in Kampung Selamat, Tasek Gelugor.

Ng Chiau Lin, 38, was shot in the left hand but his buddy Lee Wooi Shong, 34, was hit twice in the head and died at the Kepala Batas hospital at about 2.20am yesterday.

Ng does not think he was the target of the gunman because he has no enemies but said he heard that Lee had quarrelled with someone some time before the shooting.

The friends were sitting at a table outside the house when Ng heard a loud bang behind him at about 10.45pm on Monday.

"I thought it was a firecracker until I felt my hand go numb and saw blood oozing from the wound.

"There were two more bangs and everyone ran. I rushed to the back of the house to hide and used a piece of cloth to bandage my wounded hand," he said at the private hospital where he is being treated.

At the Seberang Jaya Hospital where Lee's body was sent for a post-mortem, his relatives refused to be interviewed.

OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rahman Ibrahim said the police recovered three 9mm bullet casings, believed to be from a handgun, at the scene.

Anyone with information on the incident should call the Rakan COP hotline at 04-269 1999 or contact any police station.
