KUALA TERENGGANU - Police had extended the remand of a 51-year-old man and his wife, 27, who were detained on Tuesday over the suspected abuse of his four-year-old granddaughter.

Acting Setiu district police chief Deputy Supt Idris Mohamed said the remand order on the couple had been extended until Tuesday.

The man is the child's grandfather and the woman her step-grandmother.

He said the police needed more time to investigate the case after the couple was arrested at a house in Setiu.

Police was notified after the child was brought to Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah (HSNZ) here on Monday.

The child's uncle, who brought her to the hospital, was told the child had collapsed while playing.

Upon preliminary inspection, the medical officer at the hospital discovered multiple injuries on her body and face, including a swollen left eye.

It is learnt that the child had been under the care of the couple some seven months ago after her parents divorced.
