PASIR MAS - The remand order for a couple suspected of abusing a five-year-old girl has been extended for another three days. The girl's 39-year-old father and her 25-year-old stepmother were remanded for four days after their arrest on Monday night
The extension of the remand order was issued by magistrate Mohd Redza Azhar Rezali yesterday.
The couple are alleged to have abused the girl since she was handed over by her biological mother as a condition for divorce in 2013.Besides 13 broken bones on the backbone, hips, ribs, arms and thighs, doctors found cuts, welts, bruises and pinch marks on the girl. They believe the physical damage is permanent.
An uncle of the girl has also been arrested to help investigations.
Kelantan police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mazlan Lazim, who confirmed the arrest, declined to provide details, saying it may jeopardise the investigation.
Meanwhile, a nursery teacher, Rohaida Mohamad, 44, said she took pictures of the injuries on the girl, who had been under her care since January.
"I became angry when taking pictures of the pinch marks around her private parts and I thought that the person who did this must be insane or intended to kill the child.
"I was angry because I could not do anything to stop the abuse. I tried asking the girl's stepmother to explain the bruises," she said at her home in Kampung Kubang Rambutan, Rantau Panjang.
Rohaida said she could not understand why the couple wanted to keep the child although they hated her.
