Residents go flat out with block artwork

Titled A Peace of Art, the artwork, which measures 26m by 22m, was assembled from 36 panels.

Each one featured different designs, painted by families living in Block 728 at Clementi West Street 2, and the surrounding area.

Housewife Ruziyantee Mohd Sani, 40, took part in the painting with her 65-year-old father, three children and two grandchildren. "It's nice to have it here, hanging right outside our block. We painted heart shapes and put our handprints on the banner," she said.

The artwork, which will remain there till National Day, was officially launched yesterday by Minister in the Prime Minister's Office S. Iswaran, also a Member of Parliament for West Coast GRC.

The work is part of the nationwide PAssionArts Festival by the People's Association to encourage participatory art at the community level by getting residents to co-create works with artists.

Visual artist Sun Yu-Li, 66, who led the effort, painted elements like dots and lines on the panels before they were given to residents to paint on. "These elements are a visual guide to help the community freely express their emotions and messages."
