Revellers surf the Wave

The music — a deafening mix of pulsating beats spun by top DJs — was infectious.

The atmosphere? Absolutely electrifying.

Those were the sights and sounds yesterday at Kallang Wave Mall where The New Paper threw a party from noon to midnight.

The mall was transformed into a mega dance floor as the area became packed with revellers.

The party caught the eye of Mr Michael Wei, 39. He told The New Paper on Sunday after buying tickets at the door: “I heard the music and saw the crowd. So I stopped by. The party looked really fun so I decided to join in and buy tickets.”

His son, 10, and daughter, 7, went home with little mementos — they had wacky self-portraits done by caricature artists.

Non-stop entertainment

It was a jam-packed 12 hours of non-stop entertainment as the stage became a carousel of singers, dancers and DJs.

Kicking off the day was local singing duo Jack & Rai, who performed their signature acoustic tunes.

The pair charmed the crowd with light-hearted banter during their set of original songs and old favourites.

The duo’s Jack Ho, 37, said after the performance: “I’m ecstatic.

“It was a really nice crowd and I can’t wait to hang around and party.”

Brazilian percussion band Drumworks also treated partygoers to the pulsating beat of cymbals, shakers and snare drums. And with their frenetic dance moves, the band whipped up the atmosphere in the mall to dizzying heights.

The festive mood spilled over to the entire area as crowds lined the railings of the upper levels to catch a glimpse of the festivities.

As dusk settled, the highlight of the party — 50 top local DJs — took the stage to rapturous applause.

They were a huge hit as one after another, they flooded the dance floor with their infectious beats, kicking off the dance party proper.

Among the revellers was Miss Rebecca Cheang, 28, a retail assistant.

A frequent clubber, she said that a dance party in a mall was a refreshing change: “I like to hit the clubs but to have the club brought to me is even better.”

Also partying away were finalists from The New Paper New Face 2014.

Miss Grace Ling, 18, said: “As I was walking in, I could hear the music getting louder and louder and I became more and more excited.

“I’m a big fan of house music. So the 50 DJs were the biggest highlight for me.”

The New Paper Party at Kallang Wave is a reflection of TNP’s fun and catchy coverage of news, said creative editor Ken Jalleh Jr.

“We’re as much about news presented in a vibrant way as about being unique and different.

“So, every event we organise for readers has to be fun, unusual, and provide value,” he said.

“The New Paper reader is at the heart of everything we do.”
