Rogue retailers should be jailed

SINGAPORE - I am surprised police action has not been taken against the rogue retailers who rip off customers at People's Park Complex ("People's Park Complex: The next rip-off central"; last Thursday).

Consumers Association of Singapore executive director Seah Seng Choon even said there is a "merry-go-round" of rogue retailers moving between People's Park Complex, Lucky Plaza and Sim Lim Square. Such retailers should be jailed.

If a thief snatches a woman's purse containing $10, he could be imprisoned for months. But an errant retailer gets away with cheating a customer out of thousands of dollars.

There is no good reason why electrician Lu Hu had to pay $1,804 for a phone with a $736 price tag. The law should protect unwary consumers.
