Sands of time

Local sand sculptor Tan Joo Heng, 42, touching up a sculpture yesterday which depicts the first National Day in 1966 that took place in front of the Supreme Court. The creation is part of the Sands of Time, a 100m-long installation made up of seven sand sculptures depicting Singapore's transformation into a metropolis since its separation from Malaysia in 1965.

Among them are scenes set in the heartland and City Hall, and one where the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew announces the separation from Malaysia.

Created by Mr Tan with the help of an international team of four sculptors, as well as several volunteers, the intricately sculpted installation will be on display to the public along Sentosa's Siloso Beach over the Jubilee Weekend, from Aug 7-10, in conjunction with Singapore's 50th birthday celebrations.

Visitors will also be treated to a multisensory experience as the sculptures will be accompanied by various sounds from the different eras.
