SINGAPORE - More than 400 public transportation staff received festive goodies when they showed up for work early this morning.

National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) deputy secretary-general Chan Chun Sing and union leaders dropped by Hougang bus depot at 4.30am on the first day of Chinese New Year, The Straits Times reported.

Mr Chan gave out oranges and hongbao to bus captains at Hougang bus depot and staff at Sengkang train depot at 6am.

He was accompanied by Senior Minister of State for Transport and Finance Josephine Teo and the executive committee of the NTUC's National Transport Workers' Union (NTWU), The Straits Times reported.

Mr Chan told Channel NewsAsia: "These are the people who are quietly working behind the scenes to keep all our essential systems working, so on behalf of all Singaporeans, we really want to thank all these quiet workers behind the scenes."

The event, which was organised by NTWU, ended its visit at Tanah Merah MRT station at 7.30am.
