Singapore leaders congratulate Sri Lanka's Sirisena on election victory

SINGAPORE - President Tony Tan Keng Yam and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong have written to newly sworn-in President of Sri Lanka, Maithripala Sirisena, congratulating him on his victory in the presidential election on Jan 8, 2015. 

In his letter, President Tan said: "Your victory is a testament of the faith that the people have in your leadership."

He said that there is much that Singapore and Sri Lanka can do together to further strengthen bilateral relations and that he hopes the positive momentum in Sri Lanka's reconstruction and development efforts will continue.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Lee said Singapore has consistently supported national reconciliation in Sri Lanka through concrete projects to help better the lives of Sri Lankans, such as in healthcare and education. 

Singaporean and Sri Lankan businesses have shown increasing interest to explore new opportunities in each other's countries.

He added that he looks forward to growing bilateral ties and to take relations forward.
