Singapore President Tony Tan congratulates newly elected President of Italy

SINGAPORE - President Tony Tan Keng Yam has written a congratulatory letter to Mr Sergio Mattarella on his election as President of the Italian Republic.

In Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) press release, Dr Tan wrote: "This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two countries. I look forward to working with you in taking our bilateral relations to greater heights for the mutual benefit of our two peoples."

In his letter, Dr Tan also highlighted the growing bilateral cooperation and exchanges between Singapore and Italy in numerous sectors such as education, scientific research and culture.

Mr Sergio Mattarella, 73, succeeds Mr Giorgio Napolitano, 89, who has stepped down from his position due to advanced age.
