Singapore Red Cross sends team to typhoon-hit Philippines, donates $60,000

SINGAPORE - The Singapore Red Cross will send an advance team of five Singaporeans to the Philippines tomorrow to distribute relief supplies like food, medicine and hygiene kits to typhoon-hit communities in Masbate, it said in a statement today.

It will also donate $60,000 to immediate response by Red Cross Movement Partners, giving $20,000 each to the Philippine Red Cross, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Mr Lim Theam Poh, deputy secretary general of the Singapore Red Cross, said: "We are heartened by the positive response from members of the public to our operational updates on social media. Let us do what we can to help our neighbours in need, especially in this season of giving."

Powerful, slow-moving Typhoon Hagupit ripped through central Philippines on Sunday, flattening houses and toppling trees and power lines.
