Singapore supports UN's call for political negotiations in Yemen

SINGAPORE - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) supports a return to political negotiations in Yemen, in response to the deteriorating situation in the country.

"Singapore welcomes and supports the call by United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on April 9, 2015 for all parties to the conflict in Yemen to return to political negotiations and adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians," an MFA spokesperson said.

The MFA added that it remains deeply concerned for the safety of Singaporeans still in Yemen, especially those who have not decided to leave despite repeated calls from the Ministry.

MFA has been making arrangements, in some cases in close collaboration with other foreign governments, to facilitate the departure of Singaporeans.

"However, how long we can carry on will depend on the ground conditions, which are unpredictable and rapidly deteriorating," said an MFA spokesperson.

Singaporeans in Yemen who have yet to contact the MFA or require assistance are urged to contact the MFA Duty Officer (24-hours) at: 6379 8800 / 8855 or mfa_duty_officer@mfa.gov.sg for advice and assistance.
