Singaporean found dead in Brisbane hotel room

A Singaporean woman was found dead in a hotel room in Brisbane, Australia, early on Tuesday morning.

Australian online news reports have identified her as 27-year-old Meenatchi Narayanan.

She was found stabbed to death in a third-floor room at Travelodge hotel in the suburb of Upper Mount Gravatt, reported The Australian.

The same newspaper said that screams were heard coming from the room, and police forced their way in and found the dead woman just after 12.30am.

A 31-year-old South African man of Indian descent was also found in the room, with suspected self-inflicted wounds.

He was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital where he remains under police guard, reported the Brisbane Times.

A knife found at the scene was seized by police and it did not appear that a third party was involved, added online reports.

The Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said it was aware of the case.

The Singapore High Commission in Canberra will provide consular assistance to the next of kin, added an MFA spokesman.

A spokesman from the Queensland Police Media Unit said yesterday that Brisbane police will have to speak to Ms Narayanan's family to get a better picture of what might have happened.

The spokesman declined to reveal further details, but Ms Narayanan's brother is believed to have left Singapore on Tuesday for the Australian city.

A former schoolmate of Ms Narayanan from Christ Church Secondary School described her as someone who "always brightened up somebody's day and was always willing to help".

Mr Lenny Lim, 31, who works in public relations, said he had heard the news of her death from another friend. He last bumped into Ms Narayanan about three years ago.
