Twice a year, Buckingham Palace hosts two very important house guests. One in the spring, and one in the fall.
This October, President Tony Tan and his wife Mary will be the honoured guests of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II for Singapore's first official state visit to the United Kingdom.
An accord of respect for the historic ties between Singapore and the UK, it is a gesture of particular significance extended by the Queen to commemorate Singapore's 50th year of independence.
As with all previous state visits, the entire royal household will be activated for Singapore's visit. Strict protocols will be adhered to at Buckingham Palace, where the President, his wife and the Singapore delegation will be received by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh and members of the Royal Family.
"I am Deputy Master of the Royal Household. That means that I am responsible for the hospitality and delivery of service and accommodations within the palaces," Edwards Griffiths, Deputy Master of the Royal Household said.
"In terms of the state visit, all of the staff working here in the palace will be involved in some way with the state visit. We already have started negotiations and planning very much with the High Commission [of Singapore] and [the plans] are advancing very well."
Also fully-activated will be the Queen's royal horse guards, personal bodyguards of the Royal Family since 1660. More than 200 guards from the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment will be involved in the welcome ceremony.
Traditionally, drills and dress rehearsals are stepped up four weeks prior to the state visit to ensure perfect precision on the date. The Queen's Life Guards are also in charge of escorting the Royal state carriage to Buckingham palace where the President and wife will be in residence for the entirety of their visit.
"The arrival takes place downstairs at the grand entrance which is official front door of the Palace. And from there, a number of introductions will be made by the Queen to her household," Mr Griffiths said.
"At that point, the President and Mrs Tan will be taken to their suite.
"The White Drawing room will be used for the gathering of the official suite once they have arrived, prior to the official arrival lunch.
