Singapore's first tidal energy generator launched off Sentosa

SINGAPORE - Singapore's first tidal energy generator was launched off Sentosa yesterday, a test project which could harness the power of the waves for the country's energy needs.

Designed and built by a team from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the one-kilowatt turbine is said to be the first such light, low-flow system in the tropics. Based on the NTU team's assessment, 150 to 200 of such turbines in the southern waters can generate enough electricity to power 40,000 HDB flats.
