Sisters-in-law posing as donation collectors jailed

SINGAPORE- The two sisters-in-law went door to door, pretending to collect donations for non-profit group Willing Hearts.

They fooled 79 victims, collecting about $1,000 in about a month before they were caught.

Yesterday, Santha Devi Lingam and Kamisah Shaik Mohamed , both 35, were jailed for their offences committed in May this year.

Santha, who pleaded guilty to cheating 62 donors of $855 and two charges of forgery, was sentenced to six months' jail.

Her sister-in-law, who cheated 17 donors of $170, was sentenced to two months' jail.

The scam started when the self-employed Santha wanted to make money to pay for her family's expenses.

She came up with the idea of impersonating donation collectors after seeing a group of them at a shopping centre.
