Six charged for fake GST claims

A former customs officer was among six people charged yesterday in relation to a case of corrupt and fraudulent Goods and Services Tax (GST) tourist refund claims.

The accused are former Singapore Customs officer Mohamed Yusof Abdul Rahman, Singaporean goldsmith sales executive Lim Pheck Aun, and four Indian nationals - Sundar Panneer Selvam, Baskaran Uthirapathy, Pounraj Natarajan and Gobi Raman.

The men's GST refund claims, amounting to more than half a million dollars in total, were first detected by the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore.
