SEMPORNA, Malaysia - Salamah Ahmad received a text message saying "Sayang buat apa" (Dear, what are you doing) from her husband marine police Kpl Abdul Rajah Jamuan at 11.02pm on Saturday.

The 26-year-old housewife replied that she and their son Khairin Zafran, who will turn one on July 26, were sleeping.

She did not think anything about it as he usually sent text messages from time to time while on duty.

At around midnight, one of her cousins called to break the awful news that her husband might have been involved in a shootout with Filipino gunmen in Mabul.

"I was in shock. In about an hour, the news came that he was killed. I just couldn't believe it," she told reporters at her house in Kg Bubul near here.

Salamah and Rajah, 32, got married seven years ago.

Salamah said her husband was looking forward to celebrate his son's first birthday and had already bought the family's Hari Raya clothes.

"The new clothes were all in blue. He wanted a blue theme for the family," she said, adding that the birth of their son was very special to him as she had suffered two miscarriages before.

Rajah joined the police force 12 years ago and was previously based in Perak.

A post-mortem on his remains was carried out at the Tawau Hospital mortuary.

He is expected to be buried with full police honours at the Kampung Kebun Bunga cemetery about 5km from Semporna town.
