Smoking in hospital: TTSH replies

Smoking in hospital: TTSH replies

We thank Madam Jane Chia Chen Lin ("Hospital not enforcing no-smoking rule"; Nov 8) and Mr Francis Cheng ("Make area around hospital a smoke-free zone"; Forum Online, last Saturday) for their feedback and support towards the smoking prohibition.

Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) takes a serious view towards smoking in the hospital compound.

We actively encourage patients with a smoking history to participate in our smoking cessation programme.

To discourage smokers from lighting up, we have removed all litter bins with ashtrays in the vicinity and increased the patrol by security officers.

TTSH also conducts joint enforcement with the National Environment Agency against smoking in the hospital compound. Since April, 60 tickets have been issued for such violations.

Although smoking is currently not prohibited along Jalan Tan Tock Seng, notices have been put up to advise smokers against smoking.

We appreciate the thoughts and ideas shared and will continue to work with the authorities to see how we can make TTSH smoke-free.
