Snatch thief, 52, arrested for stealing from aged woman

SINGAPORE - A 52 year-old man has been arrested for allegedly being involved in snatch theft case.

The incident took place at a food establishment along Smith Street on July 15, 2013. A 78 year-old woman had her handphone and coin purse in her hand when an unknown man appeared and snatched them before fleeing. Her purse contained her NRIC and ATM card.

With the assistance of a passerby, she managed to call the police. Officers conducted protracted investigations, which led to the arrest of the suspect at Jalan Bukit Merah on Friday. The victim's handphone was found in the suspect's residence.

The suspect will be charged in court on Aug 24, 2013 for an offence of Snatch Theft under Section 356 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, which carries a maximum punishment of 7 years' imprisonment and caning. He will be remanded for investigations.
