Speaker of Parliament to make first official visit to Thailand

SINGAPORE - Speaker of the Parliament of Singapore Mdm Halimah Yacob is making an official visit to Bangkok, Thailand, at the invitation of the President of the National Assembly of Thailand and Speaker of the House of Representatives of Thailand Mr Somsak Kiatsuranont.

Mdm Halimah will be in Bangkok from 27 - 29 August 2013. She will be accompanied by four Singapore Members of Parliament and officials from the Parliament of Singapore.

The four Singapore Members of Parliament are Dr Lim Wee Kiak, Mr Lim Biow Chuan, Ms Denise Phua and Assoc Prof Eugene Tan, who is a Nominated Member of Parliament.

This is Mdm Halimah's first official visit to a Southeast Asian country since her election as Speaker in January 2013.

While in Bangkok, she will call on Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, and her counterparts, the President of the National Assembly of Thailand and Speaker of the House of Representatives of Thailand Mr Somsak Kiatsuranont, as well as the President of the Senate of Thailand Mr Nikom Wairatpanij.

Mdm Halimah will also observe a session of the Thai National Assembly, which is equivalent to a parliamentary sitting in Singapore.
