Spicing up the record book
About 100 people, including Speaker of Parliament (3rd from left) Mdm Halimah Yacob, took part in the Sambal Belacan Challenge, and the effort was registered in the sg book of records for "most number of people pounding with pestles and mortars".

A hundred people joined Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob (third from left) yesterday in preparing ingredients to make sambal belacan, a spicy Malay dip.

They earned a place in the Singapore Book of Records for being the "most number of people pounding with pestles and mortars".

The activity was part of the 25th anniversary celebrations of Muhammadiyah Welfare Home, a shelter for youths at risk.

Earlier in the morning, residents of the home and volunteers took part in a walk around Bedok Town Park and mass Zumba exercises.

Players from the S-League football club Tampines Rovers also made a special appearance.
