Spurned man sets vehicles on fire

BUTTERWORTH - A man was detained by police after he set fire to his motorcycle and a car belonging to a woman who was believed to have spurned his advances.

Sources said the 49-year-old man came on his motorcycle to the woman's house at Taman Emas here at 2.20am yesterday.

After parking his motorcycle outside the gate, he threw his helmet at a Proton Iswara parked in the porch, smashing its rear windscreen. He then forced open the gate, smashed the rest of the Proton's windows before setting his motorcycle ablaze.

The enraged man went on to grab cardboards, curtains and anything that he could reach and threw them into the fire.

A Toyota Vios, which was parked beside the Proton, was also damaged by the blaze.

Police personnel on crime prevention rounds in the area quickly apprehended the man. The fire was put out by firemen who arrived a few minutes later.

Sources said the bizarre incident was believed to have been caused by the man's frustrations of having his love rejected by the woman. They claimed the man continued to harass the woman with phone calls before he decided to go to her house yesterday.

North Seberang Perai OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rahman Ibrahim said police were still investigating the cause of the incident.
