JOHOR BARU - A 68-year-old sundry shop owner is believed to have taken his own life inside his shop.
According to a source, who was in contact with the victim's family, the man was found hanging as he feared getting penalised due to the new tax scheme.
"He had mentioned to his family that he was scared of getting into trouble as he did not understand the mechanism," claimed the source.
This claim, however, was disputed by his business neighbour.
"The man has been running his business for the past seven years in this vicinity. He never talked to us about difficulties over taxes, but did mention that his wife was ill," a neighbour told reporters when met at the shop here yesterday.
The neighbour also said several family members were seen at the shop at 7.30am yesterday, after the man failed to return home the night before.
Family members declined to speak to reporters when approached at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital mortuary here.
Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Sulaiman Salleh said the case had been classified as sudden death and that investigation showed that there were no criminal elements.
