SINGAPORE - He brazenly molested one of his pupils at the back of the classroom when the other children were not watching.
The Ministry of Education (MOE) primary school teacher was conducting a Saturday tuition class for a self-help group when he molested the eight-year-old girl.
The 27-year-old man was jailed for a year and ordered to receive three strokes of the cane yesterday after pleading guilty to one count of outrage of modesty.
He cannot be named in order to protect the victim's identity.
The girl was at her tuition class in a primary school in the western part of Singapore when he asked her to the back of the room to do some reading. This happened sometime between 9.15am and 12.15pm on Oct 19 last year.
He made the girl stand beside him and touched her private parts with his hand when the other pupils were not watching. Even though she was scared, the girl did not dare tell anyone about the incident.
It only came to light 12 days later when she told her mother that she did not want to attend the tuition classes any more.
When asked why, the girl finally told her mother about her ordeal. The woman made a police report and the teacher was arrested on Nov 5.
Pressing for a jail term of at least nine months to a year with three strokes of the cane, Assistant Public Prosecutor Lydia Goh said the man had abused his authority and the trust placed in him.
His lawyer, Mr Mohamed Muzammil Mohamed however, said his client was very remorseful and asked District Judge Tan Boon Heng to give him a second chance by not imposing a heavy sentence.
For committing the offence, he could have been jailed up to five years, fined, caned, or receive any combination of these punishments.
