Teen buries mum's jewellery, then claims robbery

KAJANG, Malaysia - A 16-year-old girl buried her mother's jewellery within their apartment compound and lied to police that they had been robbed.

However, police called her bluff after they suspected something amiss when she claimed that the robbers also took RM20,000 (S$8,000) from her while she was at her home in Bandar Baru Bangi near here.

The girl, with a history of running away from home, was arrested by the police.

Not knowing that her daughter had hidden the jewellery, the girl's 51-year-old mother, a security guard, lodged a police report on Tuesday claiming that their home was robbed by two people.

Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rashid Abdul Wahab said the girl claimed that two people stormed into their unit armed with knives at about 3.30pm on Tuesday.

She claimed that the two forced her to tell them where her mother kept her jewellery. She claimed that the robbers took RM20,000 in cash and RM20,000 in jewellery and valuables.

"We suspected something amiss over the amount of cash kept at home," he told reporters at the district police headquarters yesterday.

ACP Abdul Rashid said police then interrogated the girl and eventually found that she hid her mother's jewellery by burying it in their apartment compound.

He added that the girl, who was arrested on Wednesday, had been remanded.
